Hypothetics
Biography
Unrelenting and direct, Bristol’s Hypothetics have a sound that pushes the four to the extremes; as engaging with driven outbursts of noise as they are with thoughtful progressive ideas, we see a band that are happy not settling.
‘Fear of standing still has brought us a long way. It wouldn’t be worth all the energy we put in if we don’t try to push each other; we try to write songs that bring out our individual strengths, in a way that the listener will immediately understand.’
Cutting their teeth at venues such as The Louisiana and The Thunderbolt, they quickly rose through the ranks, supporting Lady Bird and headlining Rough Trade a month before lockdown.
Whilst students, ‘Take It In Your Stride’ landed on Spotify editorial playlists ‘New Punk Tracks’ and ‘Fresh Finds’, as well as claiming ‘Track Of The Week’ on BBC Radio Bristol, Glos and Wilts with latest release ‘351’.
“I love these guys. What a sound. What a vibe.”
Adam Crowther, BBC Bristol
With the pandemic bringing the live scene to a halt, efforts were focused on meticulously writing improved material. Drawing expertise from the high calibre found at Factory Studios (IDLES, Squid, Massive Attack) they have seeked out both musical and personal maturity.
Over the summer of 2021, Hypothetics have recorded 3 singles, all mixed by Bruno Ellingham (Massive Attack, Joy Division).
Playing live is ultimately what all members love most. Inspired by the fluidity of Black Midi and the visceral approach of Fugazi, becoming a powerful live unit was of high priority. Picking up exactly where they left off, Hypothetics packed out a return show at Rough Trade, also earning support slots at Thekla and a place at Dot to Dot festival.
“Hypothetics’ performance had awoken something within me. Something that hadn’t been felt for a while”
